Volunteers Make an Amazing Impact

At The Children's Institute, volunteers play a vital role in all of our programs. We are proud of the individuals who choose to give their time and abilities to help others. The hours they contribute and the help they provide are an amazing gift to the children and families we serve.

Volunteer Application Cycle

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of our lives in many ways, but we continue to find ways to stay positive and connected in these unprecedented times. From our family of amazing team members at The Children's Institute of Pittsburgh to yours, we hope you are staying healthy and well as we get through this together - while remaining apart.

To protect the health and safety of our kids, families, volunteers, interns, and team members, our volunteer and internship opportunities are temporarily suspended until January 2021. Please know, however, that applications for volunteers and interns are still being accepted and kept on file. We encourage all interested individuals to still submit based on the following volunteer requirements.

Importance of “The Match”

Because our volunteers are so valuable, we take the time to carefully match their needs and skills with available positions. We ask that all applicants note their specific area of interest in volunteering (e.g.: The Day School Classrooms, administrative/office, etc). Noting your area of interest will help to facilitate a better match between our volunteers and the Children's Institute.

Volunteers may interact with children, families, therapists, and teachers. Because we are focused on rehabilitation, most of our children are not as medically dependent or fragile as those in an acute care setting. Because of this, volunteers at The Children’s Institute enjoy more direct contact with children than they may experience in other settings.

The Children’s Institute is currently experiencing a high volume of inquiries from individuals interested in volunteering. At this time, we are placing volunteers and students on a first come, first serve basis, determined by the date the application is received. Please note that due to the high volume of applicants, it may take several weeks to schedule a volunteer interview following your application approval. Thank you for your patience!

Examples of Volunteer Placements:

  • Acting as a classroom aide, fulfilling a variety of needs in The Day School. This is a great opportunity for college students studying special education.
  • Assisting in the pediatric physical, occupational or speech therapy departments. Volunteers may help with everything from computer programming to working hands on with the children.
  • Providing essential clerical services in various departments throughout The Children's Institute. Some volunteers prefer not to interact directly with the children but still want to contribute. They provide valuable support services that keep The Children’s Institute running smoothly.
