Family Preservation

It’s not always easy to be a family. In Pennsylvania alone, over 20,000 children are in foster care. One quarter of that number will seek adoption, while the other 15,000 will wait to be returned to their birth parents once issues such as mental health, employment, safety or housing are resolved.

For birth parents to reunite with their child requires a lot of work, a lot of support, and the knowledge that they’re not alone.

At Project STAR we believe in the value of permanency and a healthy, loving family.

We want to help birth parents safely reunite with their child, but this takes a lot of work, skill-building and understanding.

Family Preservation Services

We’ve developed an entire program designed to provide birth families with the tools, training and information necessary to create a positive family environment. Our goal is to help children stay in their home or be returned to it.

Through our Family Preservation Services, we help families identify their strengths and work on their weaknesses. We offer tools to assess risk factors such as drug and alcohol addiction and housing concerns. And we connect them with the community resources which can help with:

  • Childhood development
  • Discipline
  • Nutrition
  • Understanding each child’s unique needs
  • Counseling services
  • Access to supplies and equipment when necessary.

Families often come to us thanks to a referral from:

  • County child welfare agencies
  • Office of Intellectual Disabilities
